7/27/2012 - LAJES FIELD, Azores -- Members of the 65th Medical Group welcomed their new commander during a formal change of command ceremony here, July 23.

Col. Lorn Heyne, previously assigned as administrator of the 96th Medical Group, Eglin AFB, Fla., assumed command from Col. William Parker.

"I am very privileged to be assigned as the 65th MDG commander and it will be my pleasure to work with such an outstanding group of Air Force professionals," said Heyne. "This group has a heritage of excelling as evidenced by the numerous USAFE Medical Clinic and Dental Clinic of the Year awards."

Heyne will command 140 personnel in two squadrons and provide executive leadership in the management of a $3.4 million annual operating budget and a $2.4 million equipment account.

"The medical group team is nothing short of excellent," he said. "I am sure this team will continue to excel in every endeavor or challenge that is presented. As a member of this team, I will support and defend, if I may use a phrase out of our oath of office, their every action as it leads to excellence."

Heyne entered Air Force basic training in 1978 and spent seven years as an enlisted member before leaving the Air Force in 1985.

After 1.5 years in the Air Force Reserve, he was directly commissioned into the Nebraska Air National Guard and subsequently entered extended active duty in June 1988.

He has served as a Medical Service Corps officer with several operational units and staff directorates.

Heyne has served as a medical support squadron commander three times, for the 509th at Whiteman AFB, Mo., the 97th out of Altus AFB, Okla., and for the 72nd at Tinker AFB, Okla.

In July 2007, Heyne served as the deputy command surgeon at Headquarters U.S. Africa Command.

He also served as the Chief of the Medical Training Advisory Group of the Afghan National Army Regional Hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from June 2009 to June 2010.

Heyne commended Parker on a job well done.

"As a long time member of the Boy Scouts of America, we were taught to leave the campsite better than we found it; Colonel Parker did just this," Heyne said. "He left the medical group in an outstanding condition, and it is my hope to follow his legacy."

Parker is now the Chief of the Medical Support Division at the Office of the Command Surgeon, Pacific Air Forces Command, Hickam AFB, Hawaii.
