6/30/2008 - LAJES FIELD, Azores -- More than 50 technical and master sergeants from Lajes received news that they were selected for promotion to the next highest grade Thursday when Air Force officials released it publicly at 1 p.m. local time.

This is the first time eligible technical and master sergeants received the news through the virtual enlisted promotion release via the Air Force Personnel Center public Web site.
The goal of virtual promotion release is to improve notification procedures and customer service, better safeguard promotion lists, and save money and manpower.
It also ensures that eligible Airmen can learn if they were selected or not all at once. In the past, many eligible promotees would wait with anticipation a few days before public release until the lists were posted. There wasn't a standard to inform people who were and weren't selected. Under the new system, all eligible promotees will know at the same time, making the process more fair.
Air Force officials selected 5,404 of 24,223 eligible technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant, and 7,110 of 38,324 eligible staff sergeants for promotion to technical sergeant in a list that was released June 26.

The master sergeant selection rate, 22.31 percent, decreased 2.58 percent from last year, while the technical sergeant selection rate, 18.55 percent, increased .17 percent from 2007.

There were 33 staff sergeants selected from Lajes for promotion to technical sergeant and 25 technical sergeants who were selected for promotion to the senior NCO rank of master sergeant.
