The 65th Air Base Wing is the American unit at Lajes Field, Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal. This U.S. Air Forces in Europe unit is the largest U.S. military organization in Portugal.

The 65th Air Base Wing provides base and en route support for Department of Defense, allied nations and other authorized aircraft in transit, including those from the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Egypt and Great Britain. Aircraft frequently transiting Lajes Field include the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130 Hercules, C-5 Galaxy, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, and the KC-10 Extender and KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft.

Today, the 65th Air Base Wing plays a vital role in the Global War on Terrorism by enabling the expeditionary movement of war fighters, warplanes, and global communications to Combatant Commanders and supporting Joint, Coalition, and NATO operations as part of U.S. and Allied Air Expeditionary Forces.

Since 2003, thousands of aircraft have transited through Lajes Field in direct support of global sorties to and from Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. Once known as a "deployed-in-place" assignment, 65th Air Base Wing Airmen began deploying from Lajes Field in 2004 to participate in Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Air Force units that make up the 65th ABW include: the 65th Mission Support Group; 65th Medical Group; 65th Operations Support Squadron; and 65th Comptroller Squadron. Other American units here include: the Army's Surface Deployment and Distribution Command's 952nd Transportation Company; Air Mobility Command's 729th Air Mobility Squadron; Air Force News Agency at Lajes, Defence Media Activity; Det. 516, Air Force Office of Special Investigations; Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office; Department of Defense Dependent Schools, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, and the Defense Commissary Agency.
