65th Air Base Group

The 65th Air Base Group is the American unit at Lajes Field, Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal. This U.S. Air Forces in Europe unit is the largest U.S. military organization in the Azores. 

The 65th Air Base Group provides base and en route support for Department of Defense, allied nations and other authorized aircraft in transit, including those from the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Egypt and Great Britain. Aircraft frequently transiting Lajes Field include the C-17 Globemaster, C-130 Hercules, C-5 Galaxy, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, and the KC-10 and KC-135 tanker aircraft.

Today, the 65th Air Base Group plays a vital role in the Global War on Terrorism by enabling the expeditionary movement of war fighters, warplanes, and global communications to Combatant Commanders and supporting Joint, Coalition, and NATO operations as part of U.S. and Allied Air Expeditionary Forces.

Since 2003, thousands of aircraft have transited through Lajes Field in direct support of global sorties to and from Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. Once known as a "deployed-in-place" assignment, 65th Air Base Group Airmen began deploying from Lajes Field in 2004 to participate in Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Air Force units that make up the 65th ABG include: the 65th Mission Support Squadron; 65th Medical Squadron; 65th Operations Support Squadron; and 65th Comptroller Squadron. Other American units here include: the Army's Surface Deployment and Distribution Command's 952nd Transportation Company; 729th Air Mobility Squadron; Det. 6, Air Force News Agency; Det. 516, Air Force Office of Special Investigations; Defense Property Disposal Office; Department of Defense Dependent Schools, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, and the Defense Commissary Agency.
